1. GENERAL OVERVIEW
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The IEEE KNUST Student Branch is the local chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. It brings together students who are passionate about technology and innovation and connects them to the larger global IEEE community.
1.2 PURPOSE & MANDATE
The club exists to help members grow their technical knowledge and skills by providing access to resources, mentorship, and professional opportunities. IEEE also exposes students to global professional standards and ethics. Being part of IEEE gives members a chance to learn from cutting-edge research and tap into a network of engineers and technologists around the world.
2. INITIATIVES & ACTIVITIES
2.1 MAJOR PROJECTS
TechAble: An 8-week training initiative for disabilities at KNUST on graphic design, digital marketing, website development, and web design.
IEEE ARISE (African Robotics and Intelligent Sensing Expo) 2025: A flagship initiative to inspire the next generation in robotics and smart systems.
IEEE STEM outreach at KNUST Basic School.
A STEM and career outreach at Armed Forces SHS in collaboration with the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
Forge your Path in collaboration with the Electrical Engineering Students Association, KNUST
2.2 GOALS FOR THE YEAR
Technical workshop on programming languages
Industry-based seminars featuring external IEEE professionals to discuss opportunities and career experiences.
Outreach programs to senior high schools
Partnership with other student societies to co-organize programs.
Collaboration with other university student branches
Design and tech competitions with a cash prize
3. STRUCTURE & MEMBERSHIP
3.1 EXECUTIVE BODY
To ensure the smooth operation and effective delivery of its programs, the IEEE KNUST Student Branch is organized under a structured leadership system. This structure allows the club to plan, coordinate, and execute its activities efficiently while also giving members opportunities to develop leadership and teamwork skills.
At the center of this structure is the executive team, which oversees the day-to-day running of the club and guides its vision and activities.

3.2 MEMBERSHIP: HOW STUDENTS CAN JOIN OR PARTICIPATE IN THE CLUB
a. To officially be a member of the IEEE KNUST Student Branch, students first need to become an IEEE Student Member through the global IEEE membership system. This involves signing up on the IEEE website under Student Membership and paying the membership fee. Once the IEEE Student Member status is obtained, the student is eligible to be part of KNUST’s Student Branch.
b. After getting the IEEE membership, the student is added to the local Student Branch, in this case, IEEE KNUST and can participate fully in its activities. As a member, the student can attend meetings, workshops, seminars, technical talks, and other Branch activities. Student Branches also welcome involvement in organising events, volunteering on committees, and taking part in competitions or networking opportunities.
Even non-members (students without IEEE membership) may be allowed to attend some IEEE KNUST events or meetings at the discretion of the Branch, but only active IEEE Student Members are counted as official members and are eligible to hold leadership roles.
c. Once registered, the students gain access to all Student Branch activities and can join additional technical societies that match their interests. At KNUST, these include:
Instrumentation & Measurement Society (IMS)
– for students interested in measurement science and instrumentation technologies.
Industry Applications Society (IAS)
– for those passionate about applying engineering solutions in industry.
Computer Society (CS)
– for computing technology and software systems enthusiasts.
Communications Society
– for people interested in communications and networking.
4. IMPACT
4.1 HOW THE CLUB SUPPORTS STUDENTS AND FOSTERS ENGAGEMENT
As part of IEEE, student members get access to research journals, standards and technical libraries for valuable projects.
Societies in the student branch create smaller communities focused on learning and networking.
It runs STEM workshops to inspire the next generation of technocrats
Through participation of technical events, IEEE members sharpen their practical problem-solving skills and build portfolios to stand out.
